Peter Cowan

Peter Cowan is a professor in the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne; Scientist Director of the Immunology Research Centre, St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne; and current President of the International Xenotransplantation Association. His major research interests are pig-to-human xenotransplantation and the immunobiology of transplantation, in particular the role of complement, coagulation and purinergic signalling in transplant-associated inflammation and injury. He leads a long-standing national consortium that uses genetically modified pigs as donors in preclinical kidney and pancreatic islet xenotransplantation models. His group has extensive experience in mouse models of kidney, heart and liver ischemia-reperfusion injury and transplantation. This expertise will be employed to test novel anti-inflammatory reagents developed within the DIREKT project.
